Little Bumbumbee starts school

new little bee

August in Scotland means it’s back-to-school time for teachers and students alike. The end of this year’s summer holiday was harder than most for me personally since my grown-up little Bumbumbee headed to school for the first time.

I spoke to a few ‘old hands’ ahead of the big day. They know the drill. Every one of them told me – pack the tissues, you will cry – but don’t let him see your tears – because this is a big happy day for him, and he doesn’t need to be worrying about what’s wrong with mum. You never think you’re going to be ‘that’ mum do you? All the ‘old hands’ nod knowingly and sympathetically.

It’s a hard day – another milestone – knowing your little one is no longer solely dependent on you to fill their needs and keep them safe and happy. You feel like you are parting with the biggest treasure on the earth – entrusting them to strangers to do what you have done. Lion King comes to mind when Simba is presented to the Kingdom.

It’s important to remember though, the adventure is just beginning for them. They will have friends, teachers, activities and learnings to fill their day now. They are taking their first independent steps out into the world and all we can do is be there to support and guide them – until they no longer want that support and guidance. Even then, I have it on good authority, you will continue to support and guide them even if it’s from a distance.

As I wave him off at the school gates, desperately trying to hold it together until he’s out of view, I realise the best thing I can do at this moment, is go home, put the kettle on and give my littlest Bumbumbee a great big hug.

To all who’ve had to wave your little ones off to school for the first time – I feel for you. But just think of all that extra time we’ve got to ourselves to begin that creative project we’ve been putting off … after we’ve had a good cry of course.

I hope you like my new ‘grown-up’ little bee created to mark yet another milestone in the Bumbumbee family. Fly high little Bumbumbee.

Off to market

mark making

In amongst all the family activities, the summer holidays have been packed with commissions, mark-making, new products and local markets.

I love attending the local markets because I get to meet, not only a great bunch of talented stallholders, but the people that enjoy my illustrations too. These markets really allow me to see what resonates with my customers – and I’m always a little overwhelmed by the wonderful feedback my artwork receives. It brings a real sense of joy to know that a little piece of Bumbumbee Creative will bring a smile to someone else’s face or will be going home with them to adorn their living room or nursery wall. I am so appreciative of everyone who makes the time to come to these local markets because it really does give all involved a ‘feel-good’ boost.

This summer I have been focussing a lot on mark making because it helps get the creative process flowing. Experimenting freely with colour, textures, mediums and shapes really helps you see what’s possible and sometimes you just have to follow where the marks on the paper take you – often in completely unexpected directions. I turn to mark making for a multitude of reasons but more often than not, it’s when I know I want to create ‘something’ but I don’t have a clear vision in my mind of ‘what’ it is I want to create (or how I’m going to create it). It was a happy coincidence when I discovered people seemed to love the shapes and the freeform way in which these marks were created.

From here, I created a few postcards and greetings cards and took them to the markets. There seems to be something about mark-making that connects with people. Perhaps these marks evoke memories of pebbles on the beach or mossy stones in streams – or perhaps it’s because these marks can be whatever you want them to be. It’s a visual language though quite abstract in its interpretation. Suffice to say, you will see some of these mark-making experiments make an appearance in some of my illustrations later in the year.

Over the six-week summer break, Bumbumbee Creative attended The Big Green Market in Burntisland Parish Church and the Robert Nair Craft Fair in Kirkcaldy, where my watercolour postcards made their debut as small prints, along with the coastal series cards. If you came along to either of these, thank you so much for your support – and if you didn’t manage to come this time, be sure to check out the local market next time it comes to town. It’s an opportunity to discover the array of local businesses in your own backyard, catch up with people in your local community, own original, hand-crafted creations and you’ll be supporting local initiatives too. I’ve met some amazingly talented people since stepping out into the world of local markets and I am buzzing with ideas for the future.

Be seen in green

Go green

Here we are already the first Saturday in July. What is everyone up to today? If you are looking for something worthwhile to do and you are in the mood to do good for the local community and the planet, why not pop along to the Big Green Market between 10.00am and 1pm? Bumbumbee Creative will be there with a stall at the Parish Church Halls in Burntisland and we can’t wait to meet you.

Yesterday was the first time this Market opened its doors and with the aim of giving a second chance to pre-loved items. Today (Saturday 3rd July) there will be something for you fellow greenies out there.

Bumbumbee Creative is proud of its sustainability credentials, and we are always looking for greener and more sustainable ways to create whether it’s the papers we use, the recycled, compostable materials we favour or our commitment to the avoidance of single use plastics

Nature, the environment and the care of our flora and fauna has always been important to Bumbumbee – right from the very beginning. Indeed you will see so much of Bumbumbee illustrations and creations are focussed on bringing our love and appreciation of our wee beasties, our wildlife and marine life to others. I think when you care about nature and begin to focus on the world you want to leave for your children and their children, sustainability just makes good business sense. Bumbumbee would go further and say it’s our responsibility to ensure sustainability is front and centre of all we do.

If you are someone that feels the same way, this pop up event will be right up your street.

Bumbumbee Creative will join JoJo Co. , Burning Brightly – Eco Friendly Fires, and Melting Moment Mallows to name but a few.

So that’s your morning sorted out. Just a reminder, COVID arrangements apply so pack your mask with your shopping bag.

The Big Green Market – on today at Parish Church Halls, Burntisland from 10.00am – 1pm.

Proceeds from the first market will be donated to Burntisland Community Development.

Busy bees in Burntisland

nourishing ideas for the future

June’s been a busy month for us here at Bumbumbee Creative. There’s always a sense of excitement around the Summer months as we wait on that big golden ball in the sky to make an appearance (no matter how fleeting). It’s a time of year where Burntisland comes to life too and days are filled with more enjoyable, less blustery, walks along the coastline or through the seaside town. June also means getting busy with the fabulous ‘Fiver Fest which we are delighted to be a part of again.

Last October we made the decision to take part, not really knowing what to expect. The event was so well received and helped forge some new creative and community bonds that we didn’t have to think twice about taking part again.

Totally Locally Fiver Fest is a community initiative to support local shops, businesses, craftspeople and artists. Last year was touted as one of the largest, most successful events yet – but that was before Burntisland’s Fiver Fest June 2021 took centre stage. Ta Da …

This year’s event took place between June 12 and June 26 with businesses in the town offering amazing deals on their products and services for just £5.00. Seriously £5.00!!

Considering the rough 18 months everyone has had, to see (a) Burntisland filled with ‘suitably socially distanced’ shoppers and tourists buying from the local community (b) those shoppers benefit from really amazing prices for quality products or original crafts and illustrations, was just such a WIN WIN all round. Added to this – who doesn’t love Burntisland in the Summer?

For those who couldn’t make it to Burntisland, there were many offerings online too, so nobody missed out. One thing I have noticed is that Fiver Fest has a snowball effect in the community. Every year more and more people get involved, and those who missed out last year were determined to join the community this year. The snowballing extends beyond business to friendships groups and a real strengthening of the community spirit. It’s events like these that make a town an enjoyable place to live.

Businesses with a conscience

At the end of a fantastic two weeks, Bumbumbee Creative got together to run a pop-up shop with two amazing business ladies in Burntisland. They are both extremely talented and have created something very special for the market. Bumbumbee Creative got together with them because we all share the same desire and commitment to see more sustainability ‘in the mix’ when it comes to our business offerings.

This brings me perfectly to the first of those businesses – Céic Bottled. Céic Bottled create eco-friendly mixes of cakes – pre-mixed scones, pre-mixed brownies, pre-mixed biscuits, pre-mixed pancakes, pre-mixed muffins, pre-mixed cookies. Apart from making life easier for the little bakers in us all – the clever strategy to bottle all the ingredients required, reduces waste and surplus plastics and wrappings that generally accompany the baking process.

Céic Bottled is committed to sustainably sourced ingredients and provides vegan & gluten free mix options. Why not check out the website. I bet you can’t leave without placing an order – https://www.ceicbottled.co.uk

If the aroma of cakes and all things delicious didn’t entice you to our pop up shop, then perhaps the luscious and divine aromas of bodylushious did the trick. Their Earth friendly soaps, salves and other natural skincare products are created to give your whole body the special care and attention it deserves.

Bodylushious Founder Bronwyn Tutty says on her website, “You want to feel delicious and indulgent without stressing out your bank balance, or the world’s resources. I created Bodylushious to help people live a more delicious and joyful life through natural skincare and joyful dance.”
https://www.bodylushious.com/

To work alongside these ladies, surrounded by such luscious, delicious, caring products felt nourishing and enriching. I think that’s what Fiver Fest is all about – aside form the great bargains to be had – the nourishing end enriching experience of businesses and people coming together to create a vibrant community. For me it’s also about new friends, new connections and like-minded people to share exciting ideas for the future.

Summer celebrations with pirates and rainbows

Cake Topper

June was filled with celebrations at home. Father’s Day was a day of fun for Alex and the kids. I don’t know what we would we do without him, so we had to make a small fuss of course. He gets just excited about food and cake as the wild ones believe me.

We also celebrated another milestone in the family – Adam turned 5. I can’t quite believe this tiny human has been on the planet for 5 years. He is such a sociable and gregarious bundle of smiles and hilarity so ‘containing’ him through numerous lockdowns has had its challenges. We are so lucky to have so much outdoor space and nature where we live, so while he’s been unable to catch up as frequently with the friends and cousins he loves during the last 18 months, he has at least been able to be in the fresh air and the great outdoors.

As you know Bumbumbee is all about creating memorable themes, unique illustrations (and memories) to celebrate life’s milestones so imagine the fun I had coming up with ideas for a five-year-old’s birthday celebration. Originally Adam had decided we were going with the whole rainbow vibe, so I got busy making cakes, cake toppers and various decorations that reflected all the colours of the rainbow (as you do). However, in true five-year-old boy style, he decided at the eleventh hour he wanted to be a Pirate. Of course dear heart! As you are probably aware, when your child decides he wants to be a Pirate there’s no talking him out of it so we ended up with a Rainbow Pirate theme instead.

On a creative level, I think it’s good to mix things up a bit and go with the flow. Some days we all feel like we want to channel our inner pirate – other days are sweetness and light, rainbows, unicorns, and hundreds and thousands.

Buzzing with excitement

buzzing with excitement

Hello everyone. We are buzzing with excitement here at Bumbumbee Creative this week. You see we have a double celebration on our hands. Some of you may know 20th May 2021 is World Bee Day – a day that reminds us about the importance of protecting and preserving bees. Our bees are crucial pollinators and reports suggest we could literally die without them – such is the scale of pollination the humble bumblebee is responsible for.  May 20th is also an exciting day specifically for the Bumbumbee family. It was one year ago we launched Bumbumbee Creative – with a blog post about Bees on our blogging platform – The Hive.

The bumblebee symbolises the busy worker, working hard for the collective hive, going from flower to flower, gathering pollen to create something organic for us all to enjoy. It also serves as a reminder that we need to nurture and protect our wildlife and our planet. We thought this was the perfect face for Bumbumbee Creative since we care passionately about sustainability and the world around us. As parents it’s our responsibility to ensure the future for our children and their children and to lead by example.

Adam has always been fascinated by the wee beasties around him and none more so than the colourful ‘bumbumbee’. The name stuck in our family, and we thought his interpretation was a lovely reminder to always try and see the world through children’s eyes. And so Bumbumbee Creative took flight.

We were working hard behind the scenes on the lead up to the launch of Bumbumbee Creative last year and yet for all the planning, we could never have anticipated what lay ahead. For so many, 2020 was a year of incredible hardship and suffering, and for so many parts of the world, this suffering has intensified. It has made me particularly grateful for my family, my community, my work and my health. Mental health has been a key area of concern for those who have struggled with the lockdown. I know myself, it’s been the walks along the coast and an outlet through my creative side that’s kept me and the family ‘relatively’ sane.

So, it has been a very different year for us all, but I just wanted to say I have been SO grateful – at times – overwhelmed – by all your positivity and support for Bumbumbee in its first year. Thank you to the stockists who have taken Bumbumbee Cards and notebooks, thank you to all those who supported various community initiatives such as FiverFest or Meet the Maker. A HUGE thank you to all those who have bought or commissioned illustrations and creations – it has been an absolute joy to work on these for you.

As a token of my thanks and by way of celebration of our beautiful bees, look out for our give-away at the end of May. In the meantime, enjoy all things bee-related – and thank you once more for all your support. Em x

Time to blossom

Framed Daffodil

luminated letter with daffodilHow is everyone doing? I remember writing a post back in January saying, ‘the sun will shine again’ while reflecting on a Winter lockdown. Well, as promised, the Spring is here – with some sun (cough cough) – and a dash of snow – (well it is a typical Spring in Scotland). The temperature gauge can’t quite make up its mind and hedges its bets between 8 and 16 degrees – but there is definitely a brighter feeling all around.  Perhaps it’s because April delivered an abundance of chocolate (of the egg variety), a bank holiday, and an easing of some of the lockdown conditions. Springtime always heralds a feeling of ‘we made it through the dreich days’, but this year that feeling of having ‘survived’ is more apt than most.

Throughout April I was working on a few commissions and illustrations of Spring Flowers – inspired by a need to get out in the fresh air to clear the head and walk off the aforementioned chocolate eggs. On our walks I have noticed people appear more positive again and this seems to be reflected in the Spring blossoms that have burst forth. The world is beginning to ‘open’ tentatively again and there is a feeling of optimism in the air

I also have some fantastic news to share. The Honey Pot Creative Café is now stocking Bumbumbee Creative Greetings Cards and Notebooks. We are absolutely ‘buzzing’ with excitement and gratitude here.

Honey Pot Creative CafeIf you are in the local area look out for Honey Pot Creative Café. It is situated directly below the iconic Forth Rail Bridge and it has stunning panoramic views of the Firth of Forth. They run all sorts of amazing creative classes for all ages, and they even have a ceramic studio as well as a cafe and gift shop. This is my idea of a day well spent. The great news is, Honey Pot Café is re-opening to the public on Monday 26 April, 2021 (yes that’s today). They will be taking table bookings online or why not give them a call. The usual COVID protocols are in place so make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.Call Honey Pot Creative on: 0131 319 2323 or Book a Table for a pot of Tea or Creative Play Book a table

Well, that’s about it from me but I would love to hear how April’s been treating you. Are you all dying to get to the hairdressers or just to get out and start doing the things we used to take for granted? My little wildlings can’t wait to spend time with their cousins and just get out there and cause general mayhem. Phew – well it’s been a long winter – but we made it. We’re through to the other side. We’re ready to make up for lost time and blossom again.  Enjoy Spring everybody.

Take note – it’s Mothering Sunday soon

letterbox gift

Don’t forget if you live in Scotland – Mothering Sunday is 14th March. I have a few goodies in store to surprise your mum with, but first a little history lesson.

We all celebrate ‘Mother’s Day’ or ‘Mothering Sunday’ in our own ways but where did it all start?

Well way back in 16th Century Britain, Mothering Sunday was a religious event that actually had no connection to ‘mothers’ at all. The word ‘mothering’ referred to the ‘mother church’ (yes seriously). On the fourth Sunday of Lent people returned to their ‘mother’ church for a special service. This was called ‘going a-mothering’ and became quite a highlight (probably because servants actually got a day off for this).

Well, if you’re a mother yourself you might still look forward to the ‘servants’ day off’ because let’s be honest, we do sometimes feel like we are our little angel’s servants, don’t we? Or is that just me?

Mums outside Scotland and the rest of the UK, have to wait until the second Sunday in May for their days off though, since ‘Mother’s Day’ in the US and Australia are unrelated to the Religious event, and are considered more ‘modern’ occasions. The rest of the world has a woman called Anna Jarvis to thank for the modern version of Mother’s Day as she had a desire to honour her own mother for her peace activism in the war. The idea grew from there that all mothers deserved to be honoured and celebrated.

That said, Anna Jarvis did have some hard-line views about the type of gifts you should bring to your mother. Apparently, a ready-made printed card was not acceptable nor was a box of chocolates since the gift-giver ended up being the one to eat all the chocolates. She felt so strongly about the ‘commercialism’ of Mother’s Day that she ended up boycotting the event she had lobbied to create – and she took part in protests – to the point she was arrested for disturbing the peace!

Well Anna, I hope you approve of my creations which are perfect for all mothers out there. They are unique and hand-created so you know a lot of love and attention has gone into the original design. In fact, it is my hope that mothers everywhere would feel quite spoiled to receive one of our Bumbumbee creations. For instance, to celebrate Spring and getting out in the great outdoors, we have illustrated a beautiful collection of Coastal characters and marine life designs which would create a stunning theme or feature wall at home. Given the times we are living in we thought one of our cards and a Coastal Notepad would easily create a lovely little surprise letterbox gift for Mother’s Day. Why not head over to our Shop or visit us on Instagram for some inspiration. Please note if you are ordering a gift for Mother’s Day, Wednesday 10th March 2021 is last day for orders (stock levels permitting).

You may be a working mum, a single mum, a foster mum, a would-be mum – a woman who desires to be a mum. You may have someone in your life that isn’t related by blood but feels like a mum to you. For many of us, myself included, Mother’s Day can be a painful reminder that our mothers are no longer with us, and others may have a complicated relationship with their mum. Mother’s Day can be a reminder of loss – or a day of joy – so don’t miss an opportunity to let your mother know how special she is to you. We only ever have one mother. And if you know a mum that’s doing it tough or would appreciate being acknowledged in some way – I’m sure she won’t say no to a card or a box of chocolates.

The Coastal Collection – inspiring connection

Oystercatcher

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts"

Let’s kick things off on a positive note. Spring really is just around the corner!

What does Spring mean to you? Here in Scotland, it means slightly longer, brighter days and it means snowdrops and crocuses breaking through the soil … it means better, warmer weather (cough cough). OK so that last one was pure fantasy, but you get the idea. It’s a season full of potential and new life. All these things really do have the power to affect our mental health and emotional wellbeing. Yes – you could say Spring brings out the optimist in me.

And let’s face it, optimism and resilience are what’s helped so many get through these challenging times. After the 12 months we’ve just had, it’s become obvious that a connection with nature, the great outdoors and daylight hours is crucial to how feel at any given time. I don’t know about you, but during lockdown I looked forward our daily escapes out into the fresh (sometimes extremely crisp) air. I think it’s what has kept us all sane and allowed us to breathe!

We are lucky to live at the foot of an extinct volcanic hill, nestled on the edge of ancient rural land, while on the other side, we can walk down past the small loch and farmland, down to the rugged coastline and meander along stretches of sandy beach and park trails. With this array of wildlife and environments to enjoy on our doorstep, there’s no shortage of inspiration for artwork and illustrations.

It’s from those ‘lockdown’ adventures I found inspiration for my latest line – the Coastal Collection – each illustration an original. You may remember the ever so stylish Puffin? A very dapper dresser indeed in his red, white and blue. He was quite a hit when he debuted on Insta and Facebook. Recently, (courtesy of our extensive walks) he’s been joined by the highly vocal and equally well-dressed Oystercatcher as well as the rather harassed and shaggy-looking, long-legged Heron.

One of my personal favourite commissions recently, was the joyous Whale. Often called the musicians of the sea – these playful creatures live off their blubber in the colder months, only hunting in summer. I think after a year in lockdown we can all relate to that.

Perhaps lockdown has given us all an enhanced appreciation for nature, the sunlight on our skin, the breeze through our hair and across our faces. It’s as if witnessing the seasons and cycles has made us all feel connected to something bigger and provided a sense of hope. It’s made us realise how important it is to find the joy and appreciation where we can, and be grateful for the connections we have in life – whether it’s with family, friends, loved pets, or our community. We have all been forced to look closer to home for our happiness and connections. We have all been forced to look at our true nature and what we can bring to the situation – whether that’s optimism or a creative disposition.

I think that’s what the Coastal Collection represents for me. It was inspired from a time where the future was unknown, yet each day the sun rose, the Whales sang their melodic music to one another and the long-legged, patient and diligent Heron still harpooned fish with his dagger-shaped yellow bill.

I do hope over time, The Coastal Collection comes to represent something special to you too.

If you are inspired to create a coastal theme at home, or you would like to create a gallery of unique and original artwork, The Coastal Collection could be for you. The series brings warmth and personality to an elegant and stylish collection. Perhaps you know someone that would like a card as a pick-me-up just to help carry them through to better times? One of our Coastal Collection Greeting Cards could be just the things – a little reminder that you’re thinking about them and that connecting with calming colours of nature is the tonic we all need.

I hope you enjoy the new Coastal Collection which will be launched in our online story within the next few weeks.

Be creative. Be inspired. Be an individual … but most of all Be kind.

1000 Thanks

It’s hard to believe it now but 12 months ago I was still in the ‘thinking/scoping/ research phase’ of Bumbumbee Creative. Or, perhaps as my sister would affectionately say, the ‘umming and ahing’ stage of Bumbumbee Creative.

I had always dreamt of having my own creative business and everyone kept saying ‘you should sell your illustrations’, but I’ll be honest, I was apprehensive – I felt the fear. It’s one thing to create artwork for friends and family – but quite another to create illustrations and put them ‘out there’ for people to buy. It’s a little piece of yourself that you put in that artwork, so it feels raw to put it out there. I care about the quality of every single piece of work I do. Such perfectionism can actually hold you back – but but luckily the Art Teacher in me decided ‘OK – the time is now’.

I finally took my courage in both hands at the end of May 2020 and to be honest, I’ve barely had a second to look back. When you consider the craziness of 2020, it was a potentially insane time to start a new venture. Which is why looking at Instagram today, I’m overwhelmed with such gratitude to you all.

You see today, Bumbumbee Creative hit a mini milestone – 1000 followers! I can hardly believe it to be honest and I am genuinely touched that so many of you have joined us on our journey.

Thank you SO MUCH for your support and for getting involved in everything from creating rainbows for our windows, to charity events to our local business initiatives through COVID. Thank you for sharing your milstones and magical moments with us. It’s been such an honour to create keepsakes to welcome new babies into the world or to celebrate new homes. It has been so appreciated and I get a little rush of excitement when I realise this is still just the beginning. In fact as I write, I’m planning a new collection inspired from some of our lockdown walks which I hope you’ll enjoy.

If I had any words of wisdom to impart it would have to be ‘Feel the Fear – and do it anyway’ – because let’s face it – none of us know what tomorrow will bring. I certainly didn’t expect to wake up to 1000 Followers on Insta !!

Thanks for bee-ing here!

Be creative. Be inspired. Be an individual … but most of all ... Be kind
